We all know that windshields allow us to see clearly out the front of vehicles, and protect us from wind, stone chips, and debris but did you know that the windshield has a lot of purposes and is full of historical significance? Here are 5 Fun Windshield Facts and a bonus at the end!
1. Windshields Were a Luxury Item
Back in the day when the first automobiles started rolling out in the early 1900s, windshields were not yet standard. The windshields was an add-on item that consisted of a piece of glass that could be lowered when it became dirty. Windshields were expensive and increased the price of automobiles and were only available to the wealthiest automobile owners. In 1915, Oldsmobile began putting windshields on all of their vehicles, making them a standard automobile feature.
2. Windshield Technology and The Future
Auto glass, like all other materials, has improved considerably throughout the years. Auto glass is an essential part of automobiles, and car manufacturers are investing in ways to protect interiors using special UV filters and tints. Smart cars have become a reality, windshields and auto glass are following suit. In the future, we may see cars with windshields that display information such as turn-by-turn directions or even provide augmented reality features.
Furthermore, glass is becoming increasingly safe. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are now utilized in the majority of vehicles, which assist the driver by warning them about other cars, road dangers, and obstructions. Sensors that are primarily concentrated in the windshield are used in this technology. This also means that the auto glass industry will also have to adapt to the rapid change. Rather than just repairing or replacing windshields, Windshield Technicians will need to calibrate technology to ensure that the “smart glass” safety functions operate as intended to best protect drivers on the road.
We at Pegasus Auto Glass always stay on top of the latest tools & technology, so we can best serve our customers and find ways to optimize our service.
3. Windshield Scratches Are Dangerous Too
Naturally, since the windshield protects the entire vehicle structure, it’s critical to keep it free of chips and cracks. Scratches, on the other hand, can be dangerous. If the scratch is too long and deep, it may cause a crack or fracture.
If the scratch is minor, it might hinder visibility and, as a result, increase the risk of an accident. Small pebbles striking the windshield can cause scratches, but worn windshield wipers are also to blame. As soft rubber wears down, it exposes glass to hard plastic and sometimes bare metal, which is strong enough to create lots of tiny scratches that dig into your windshield. 4. Windshields Help Deploy Airbags
Airbags are a fantastic safety feature for automobiles that cushion and support the body in the event of an accident. The airbag should ideally deploy correctly and minimize injuries. Your windshield, on the other hand, is incredibly important in order for your airbags to deploy correctly
The airbag is activated as a result of the impact. The airbag smashes into the windshield and rebounds in your direction to provide protection after it has deployed. If your windshield is broken due to a chip or crack, the force of the airbag may cause it to shatter further, preventing it from deploying in your direction. This raises the risk of some serious injuries that could have been avoided by having a damage-free windshield
5. Tempered glass saves lives
Automakers generally install tempered glass windows on the sides and back of their cars. This is a safety precaution. When tempered glass breaks, it doesn’t shatter into a swarm of sharp, jagged shards that pierce and cut your neck. Rather, the entire glass breaks down into tiny little pieces. This gives drivers and passengers a better chance of surviving an accident. The windshield, on the other hand, is composed of laminate glass, which does not shatter. It’s made up of 3layers, two layers of real glass with a strong piece of plastic in-between.
Bonus fun fact:
Windshield wipers were invented by a woman
in 1903 long before women had equal rights, a woman from Alabama named Mary Anderson invented what we know today as the Windshield Wiper. She was stuck in traffic in New York City on a snowy day and had seen a trolley car driver having difficulty with removing snow as every so often he’d be seen getting out from his vehicle to remove snow from his Windshield. After Observing this, Mary had an idea and wanted to help.
Mary had applied for a patent and was granted U.S. Patent No. 743,801. Long story short, Mary, unfortunately, didn’t get any money for her invention, but at least she got some credit. In 2011 she was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame.
